I first became aware of Cara at an information event at the University of Portsmouth, and the excellent work that they are doing towards fulfilling a vital mission. That event featured a talk by an impressive female PhD student from Syria, who had found her way to Portsmouth through Cara. That first exposure to a Cara PhD Fellow was a poignant one, reminding me of just how many promising young scholars there are to be found around the world, with putative brilliance that was subdued through the sheer need to survive in a beleaguered and ravaged nation. Here was living proof of how the chance to live in safety and make progress through unhindered studies can enable one to thrive and truly reach their potential. Thus, later that year, when I was myself asked to consider supervision of a potential PhD Fellow from Syria, I did not hesitate to accept, and created a research project plan. Some months later, following completion of all the necessary administrative procedures, all very ably aided by the continued assistance of Cara, Nour arrived to start her first day as a PhD student in my research laboratory.

Today, wind forward four years and I have the great satisfaction of having mentored a recently graduated PhD scientist, who has authored a high quality thesis as well as several publications from her work within molecular cancer research. The journey Nour took from the beginning was a long and steep one, there being at the start only a slight overlap between her knowledge and the particular area of molecular bioscience research which she was about to enter. However, she threw herself fully into the mire, with only the certainty that her success depended almost entirely on her own application. Nour initially underwent a variety of training opportunities, both in the lab as well as in the broader academic environment of the university. This was in parallel to a growing familiarity with and deeper immersion in the project, which in turn provided greater confidence and stimulation whenever the project was yielding interesting results. Of course, the biggest factors were the high level of motivation coupled with technical skill that Nour displayed from the outset – both of these aspects ensured that she could truly develop as a trainee researcher. This she did in a continuous way, learning new techniques and constantly increasing her knowledge and experience in the research field. Thus, within the first year, her work had already yielded a substantial body of data that placed her on a solid trajectory to lead to a first manuscript for publication.

Alongside the hard graft of daily lab work throughout almost the entire term of the PhD, Nour also participated in many other activities that contribute to the development of a PhD scholar. These included graduate development workshops at the university (e.g. scientific writing, library searches etc.), journal club and research seminars. Moreover, she had the added valuable opportunities of presenting her work, internally as well as at major national and international cancer research conferences, supervising undergrad honors projects in the lab, helping me to run laboratory practical classes, and participating in science communication to a lay audience as the Cara scholar at Cumberland Lodge.

Now that she has been awarded her PhD this year, I can only express my appreciation and satisfaction at having worked with Nour, and to guide her work that culminated in not only professional development and success but also personal fulfillment and growth. I thank Cara and the university for realising her potential and enabling her to make a lasting impact on the research field already as a student, thus setting her on a course for continued academic success into the future.

تعرفت إلى مؤسسة كارا لأول مرة في حدث إعلامي في جامعة بورتسموث، وأدركت العمل الممتاز الذي يقومون به لتحقيق مهمة حيوية. شهد هذا الحدث محاضرة ألقتها طالبة دكتوراه رائعة من سورية، وجدت طريقها إلى بورتسموث عبر مؤسسة كارا. كان التعرف الأول لطالب دكتوراة في كارا مؤثرًا ، يذكرني بعدد الباحثين الشباب الواعدين الموجودين في جميع أنحاء العالم، بذكاء مفترض تم إخماده من خلال الحاجة المطلقة للبقاء على قيد الحياة في دولة محاصرة ومدمرة. كان هنا دليلًا حيًا على كيف يمكن لفرصة العيش في أمان وإحراز تقدم من خلال الدراسات دون عوائق أن تمكن المرء من الازدهار والوصول إلى إمكاناته حقًا. وهكذا ، في وقت لاحق من ذلك العام ، عندما طُلب مني النظر في الإشراف على طالب دكتوراه محتمل من سورية ، لم أتردد في القبول ، ووضعت خطة مشروع بحثي. بعد بضعة أشهر ، وبعد الانتهاء من جميع الإجراءات الإدارية اللازمة ، وبفضل المساعدة المستمرة من كارا ، وصلت نور العبد الله الكفري لتبدأ يومها الأول كطالبة دكتوراه في مختبري البحثي.

واليوم ، بعد أربع سنوات، يسعدني جدًا أن أشرف على عالمة دكتوراة تخرجت حديثًا ، قامت بتأليف أطروحة عالية الجودة بالإضافة إلى العديد من المنشورات من عملها في أبحاث السرطان الجزيئي. كانت الرحلة التي قامت بها نور منذ البداية طويلة وشاقة، ولم يكن هناك في البداية سوى تداخل طفيف بين معرفتها ومجال أبحاث العلوم الحيوية الجزيئية الذي كانت على وشك الدخول فيه. ومع ذلك ، فقد ألقت بنفسها بالكامل في المعمعة، مع التأكد فقط من أن نجاحها يعتمد بالكامل تقريبًا على جهدها الخاص. خضعت نور في البداية لمجموعة متنوعة من فرص التدريب ، سواء في المختبر أو في البيئة الأكاديمية الأوسع للجامعة. كان هذا بالتوازي مع الإلمام المتزايد بالمشروع والانغماس فيه بشكل أعمق، والذي بدوره وفر ثقة أكبر وتحفيزًا كلما كان المشروع يسفر عن نتائج مثيرة للاهتمام. بالطبع، كانت العوامل الأكبر هي المستوى العالي من التحفيز المقترن بالمهارة الفنية التي أظهرتها نور منذ البداية – كلا الجانبين ضمنا أنها يمكن أن تتطور حقًا كباحثة متدربة. فعلت هذا بطريقة مستمرة ، وتعلمت تقنيات جديدة وزادت باستمرار معرفتها وخبرتها في مجال البحث. وهكذا ، خلال السنة الأولى ، كان عملها قد أسفر بالفعل عن مجموعة كبيرة من البيانات التي وضعتها على مسار صلب يؤدي إلى أول مخطوطة للنشر.

إلى جانب الكسب المشروع من العمل المخبري اليومي طوال فترة الدكتوراه تقريبًا، شاركت نور أيضًا في العديد من الأنشطة الأخرى التي تسهم في تطوير باحث دكتوراة. وشملت هذه ورش عمل تطوير الخريجين في الجامعة (مثل الكتابة العلمية والبحث في المكتبات وما إلى ذلك)، ونادي المجلات والندوات البحثية. علاوة على ذلك، فقد أتيحت لها الفرص القيمة المضافة لعرض عملها، داخليًا وكذلك في مؤتمرات أبحاث السرطان الوطنية والدولية الكبرى، والإشراف على مشاريع الشرف الجامعية في المختبر، ومساعدتي في إدارة الفصول العملية في المختبر، والمشاركة في التواصل العلمي إلى عالم عادي. الجمهور بصفته باحث كارا في كمبرلاند لودج.

الآن وقد حصلت نور على درجة الدكتوراة هذا العام، لا يسعني إلا أن أعبر عن تقديري ورضائي للعمل مع نور، وتوجيه عملها الذي بلغ ذروته ليس فقط في التطوير المهني والنجاح ولكن أيضًا في تحقيق الشخصية والنمو. أشكر كارا والجامعة لإدراكهما إمكاناتها وتمكينها من إحداث تأثير دائم في مجال البحث بالفعل كطالب، وبالتالي وضعها في دورة تدريبية للنجاح الأكاديمي المستمر في المستقبل.
